Jesus Teaches Melissa About
Life After Death

Where Do Pets Go when They Die?

In 1959 we were blessed with the gift of a beautiful daughter. In her first six months she was struck deaf and blind by Spinal Meningitis. Those who have experienced life-threatening illness with those they love know what it’s like to walk through the valley of darkness. And each one who has put their pain at the feet of Jesus knows the peace and joy that comes from trusting Him. Jesus promised us He would make her whole some day. He didn’t tell us when that day was. That, and all that went with it was the trial of our faith.

With the loss of the next two babies, and then the entrance of three more, our family eventually grew. The Lord made her father and me a promise that He’d teach all of our six children in His ways. Michael and Susan would be taught in heaven. The others on earth would be taught throughout their life about Him, by Him. He is keeping that promise, for it is a never-ending process. It’s a marvelous thing to watch the way Jesus continues to honor that promise down through the grandchildren. Many of us are not aware of His working among us, and what a joy it is when we recognize it. The following is how He taught Melissa about life after death.

Many of us struggle with the desire to know what’s in the hereafter, or even if there is a life after death. Melissa was very afraid in a soundless world of anything she couldn’t see. The children at the Kansas State School for the Deaf, where she was being educated, must have discussed hell fire, the devil and powers of darkness, because Melissa carried a fear that she didn’t get from her parents.

One day during her sophomore year, she came home very upset. The schoolyard caught fire and was burned into a circle leaving what appeared to be a black hole with flames leaping upward. Melissa was sure that hole was hell opening up, and the devil was going to pop up through there at any moment and grab her. I tried to reassure her that this is not what hell is.

“In the first place, Satan is not in hell,” I told her. “He’s here on earth hassling the Saints. Secondly, hell is like a prison where people go to pay their debt for sin, and learn about Jesus. Then they can either believe Him or not. Jesus went into hell to preach to the prisoners during the three days His body was in the tomb. After that He was resurrected,” I explained. Her eyes got big as if to say, “Oh, is that true?” But still she was uneasy. She needed evidence that the devil was not going to come and snatch her away, and I couldn’t give her any peace. It had to come from God with power. One night she had a dream.

She dreamed she was attending the wedding of a friend of the family, Mr. And Mrs. James McKay, which was a week or two away. She saw details such as who was present, who sat where, the many gifts that were brought, and was told that Jim and Elizabeth wouldn’t have a honeymoon.

She saw Jesus in the audience. He came over to her after the ceremony and began explaining the sequence of the human existence on earth and thereafter. Jesus told her that her parents were born on earth, married and then she was born. He said they would get old and die, then go to heaven where they would wait for her. Then, when she got old and died, her parents would come to get her and take her to heaven where we would all be together again.

Jesus then showed her the difference between the body of flesh and the body of the spirit. She saw Him lay down or “take off” His fleshly body, and was shown His Spirit body. She said it was very “lightweight.” He then arose into heaven and the dream ended.

As she told me the dream, I was again totally awed at the blessings our family was receiving. The young man to be married had been staying with us for three days and was in deepest prayer, concerning his marriage. Melissa had no knowledge that Jim was afraid the bride’s parents might stop the wedding, and if it did take place, he thought they might not attend. Melissa assured him the wedding would take place, and that her parents would attend. Everything came to pass just as Jesus had shown Melissa.

Knowing Melissa’s fear of death, I asked her, “Melissa, are you afraid to die now?” With a big grin, she shook her head, “No.” Her peace remains just as strong today.

Where Do Pets Go When They Die?

Melissa has seen Jesus more than anyone else in the family. Just recently she lost her friend—her dog she had had for many years. Stuie was her ears, and a faithful protector. She was at work when fifteen-year-old Stuie had a heart attack and had to be put to sleep. She came home from work that evening telling us that she couldn’t understand why Jesus appeared to her at work with Stuie at His side. She said they both just looked at her, and then they were gone. When she discovered Stuie was not in her room to greet her, she understood.

Just recently the Lord appeared to her at work again with every pet this family has lost. That’s 1 cats and 3 dogs. There’s many things we don’t understand about the life hereafter, but this much we can know—that the love of God covers all of our needs; that love comes from God’s Spirit; and spirit never dies. These pets are alive somewhere just the same as our loved ones, our family and friends. We will see them again.
